Shooting range meeting slated
for Wednesday

The Department of Land and Natural Resources will hold a public scoping meeting for a proposed public shooting range at Puuanahulu from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the West Hawaii Civic Center’s Community Meeting Hale.

“This scoping meeting is to help us gain input about issues that are important to the public, in advance of future range design and the environmental assessment process,” said DLNR Chairman William J. Aila Jr.

The project site is comprised of 1 square mile located within the Puuanahulu Game Management area and mauka of Queen Kaahumanu Highway, immediately adjacent to the West Hawaii sanitary landfill.

Range elements are anticipated to include public rifle, pistol, bow hunting, sporting clays, skeet, trap and airgun ranges, structures to house management and operations, as well as a hunter education center, restrooms, picnic areas and parking.

Suicide prevention group meets Wednesday

The Prevent Suicide West Hawaii Task Force meets from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room at the West Hawaii Community Health Center in Kailua-Kona. All who have an interest in preventing suicide in the community are welcome to attend.

The center is located on the corner of Hualalai Road and Kuakini Highway.

Historical park announces programs

Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is holding the following programs and special events in June:

c Saturday: National Trails Day hike begins at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to join a park ranger for a one-hour hike to Aiopio Fishtrap.

c Mondays: Kumu Keala Ching and Na Wai Iwi Ola teach beginning hula at 9:30 a.m. Mana Hasegawa teaches beginning ukulele at 10:30 a.m.

c Tuesdays beginning June 19: A geology walk with volunteer geologist Mark Solien are held at 9 a.m.

c Thursdays: Informal guitar and ukulele playing with Rance Pinao and Friends is held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

c June 9: The public can craft a lei for Father’s Day with Vaina Barton from 9 a.m. to noon at the park’s visitor center. Participants should call the number below to sign up.

All programs above start at Hale Hookipa, the park’s visitor center.

County to issue
senior ID cards

The Hawaii County Coordinated Services for the Elderly Program of the Elderly Activities Division will issue ID cards for seniors 60 years and older from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Kohala CSE/Courthouse.

Staff will also issue cards at the following locations: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Walmart, Kailua-Kona; 9 to 11 a.m. June 12, L. Yoshimatsu Senior Center, Waimea; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13, West Hawaii Civic Center; and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 29, Yano Hall, Captain Cook.
