The 11th annual Kukio Challenge will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The race features a half-mile swim, three-mile run, and either a four-mile OC-1 paddle course or a two-mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard course.
Athletes age 14 and older may register for the event, which is limited to 100 entrants.
The cost is $65, and athletes must register online at kukio.net by 3 p.m. Friday. Participants may register on race day for $75.
Proceeds benefit the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, a group that aims to ensure protection of the natural, cultural and scenic resources of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.

Hawaiian Colt Starting Challenge this weekend
Maui’s Russell Beatty and the Big Island’s Lani Nakachi will compete in the Hawaiian Colt Starting Challenge on Saturday and Sunday at the Horseplay Equestrian Center’s outdoor arena in Honalo. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children aged 7 and older. Children ages 6 and younger are admitted free of charge.
Beatty advertises himself as a “horse whisperer.” The event will feature two round pens, two unbroken horses and the two horse trainers. They will use natural horsemanship to tame and get on and ride these horses in only two hours.

strength training
camp June 13-15
Daniel Mar Chong, performance training and injury prevention specialist, will lead the Mar Athletic Performance Enhancement Camp for students 14 years and older June 13-15 at Hawaii Prep’s Nakamaru Fitness Center.
Students can choose from one of two camp times: 1 to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 to 4 p.m. The camp fee is $100, and space is limited to the first 20 athletes.
The camp will cover the fundamentals of a progressive strength training technique. Mar Chong breaks away from traditional strength training and introduces new performance enhancement training techniques. At the conclusion of every workout there will be a 10-15 minute presentation on hydration, nutrition and supplements by Scott Oshiro, Certified Athletic Trainer for Hawaii Prep.

Beginner golf
classes for women
Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning June 9.
The classes are open to all women interested in the basics of golf. Classes meet five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m.

Speed clinic at Konawaena June 12, 13
Joshua Abner, the track and field and cross-country coach at Honokaa High, and Rick Hagedorn of Speedburners will host the Big Island Speed Clinic at Konawaena High June 12 and 13.
The clinic is designed to help Big Island athletes “create speed in the athletic world,” Abner said.
The clinic is open to athletes interested in becoming faster through proper speed training.
The cost of the clinic is $100 for both days.

King’s Swim July 7
at Kailua Bay
Kona Aquatics will host its 18th annual King’s Swim at 8 a.m. July 9 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Event organizers will not allow fins or wetsuits. Applications are available at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia St.) in Kailua-Kona. A nonrefundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application.
The registration deadline is June 30.
Late registration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Kailua Pier on race day. The late registration fee is $20.
Awards go to the top three male and female finishers and to winners in each of the event’s 14 age groups. Volunteers with kayaks or surfboards wishing to join the safety patrol for the swim are welcome to participate.

Also, Linda Elliot, founder and president of the Hawaii Wildlife Center in Kapaau, will join the program. The HWC is a center with research, education and outreach closely tied to the main job of treating, rehabilitating and eventually releasing Hawaiian wildlife back to its native environment.
Elliot will discuss the HWC’s selection as a finalist for Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program. The HWC needs votes on June 22 at 100carsforgood.com to earn the vehicle for transporting sick and injured animals and extend the reach of the HWC’s education and outreach programs to everyone who enjoys Hawaii. The tournaments offer five boys age divisions (5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14), a high school boys division, three girls age divisions (10-and-under, 12-and-under, 14-and-under) and a high school girls division. The tournament’s age cutoff date is Dec. 31, 2011.
Each division has a limit of 10 teams. Teams interested in participating must complete registration materials two weeks prior to the start of a tournament. Submit registration packets at the community policing office (formerly the receiving desk in the public safety building) in Hilo or the Kona police receiving desk. Interested teams may also fax materials to 961-2209 in East Hawaii or 327-3583 in West Hawaii.
