A Kona man is facing kidnapping and other offenses stemming from an apparent kidnapping discovered during a shoplifting investigation Tuesday afternoon in Hilo.
Dane Frank Kendrick, 29, was charged late Thursday with shoplifting, first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $71,000.
Kendrick was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police responded to a report of a 29-year-old Kona man and a 21-year-old Kona woman being detained by security for shoplifting at a store on Makaala Street.
According to police, the man identified himself using another person’s name. Police discovered this when a 23-year-old Volcano man came forward at the store and informed officers that he was actually the person whose name the shoplifting suspect used.
The Volcano man then told police that while he had been home, Kendrick and a female companion had entered the residence and demanded drugs. The victim was reportedly threatened by the man, whom police said brandished a bladed weapon, and then forced into a vehicle and driven to the store on Makaala Street.
When the two left the vehicle, the victim, who was not injured, left and eventually contacted police.
Kendrick, along with 21-year-old Angela Maldonado of Kailua-Kona were subsequently arrested on suspicion of shoplifting, terroristic threatening and kidnapping.
At 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Maldonado was charged with shoplifting, according to police. She was released pending further investigation of the other offenses and after posting $250 bail on the shoplifting offense.
