King Kamehameha Day events announced

Historic Kailua Village hosts the traditional King Kamehameha Day floral parade June 16 featuring floats, marching bands, hula halau and pa‘u equestrian units representing the eight major Hawaiian islands. Private mounted units, a horse-drawn carriage and more than 90 riders on horseback will also participate.

A Hawaiian music and art festival, or hoolaulea, will take place in the ballroom of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., highlighted by a free concert featuring Cyril Pahinui, Darlene Ahuna and the Honokaa High School Jazz Band.

Kailua-Kona Seniors meets Wednesday

The Kailua-Kona Seniors members will meet to listen to a guest speaker at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kona Outdoor Circle. Bring a bag lunch.

meeting Thursday

The Kona Camera Club will meet Thursday at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G. The doors open at 6 p.m., and the meeting begins at 6:30. Visitors are welcome.

Garden hosts program for Venus transit

Paleaku Peace Gardens in Honaunau will host six days of astronomy events ending with the transit of Venus. Visitors are welcome to attend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and until 6 p.m. June 5 — the day of the transit. Free solar filters are available for safe sun viewing.

Astronomy artist Jon Lomberg will lecture on the transit and give tours of the gardens’ Milky Way Galaxy model at 2 p.m. Thursday through June 3. The tour is planned for 10 a.m. June 4 and 5. Admission is $12 per person; $20 per couple; and $25 for families of up to five members.

The gardens will screen a live NASA webcast of the Venus transit from noon to 6 p.m. June 5. Tours of the galaxy garden are slated at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. for $10. Also, Kona Coffee farmers will offer samples from their private reserves.
