Police arrested 32 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 14 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

Police arrested 32 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 14 and Sunday; nine were involved in traffic accidents and one was younger than 21.

Police have made 558 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 577 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 13 motorists while Hilo officers arrested 12. Ka’u and South Kohala officers arrested two motorists in each district while Hamakua, North Hilo and Puna officers arrested one in each district.

There have been 576 major accidents this year compared with 542 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with nine fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, according to police, four of those fatalities were related to drugs and one to alcohol.
