on DL, recall DeJesus

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Dodgers placed second baseman Mark Ellis on the 15-day disabled list because of a banged up left knee — making him the fifth position player and fourth regular that manager Don Mattingly has lost in a span of 11 days.

Ellis was injured during the seventh inning of Friday night’s 6-5 Dodgers victory when he took a short toss from shortstop Dee Gordon on a fielder’s choice grounder by Shane Robinson and was upended by Tyler Greene on a hard but clean straight-on takeout slide. The Dodgers already have center fielder Matt Kemp, third baseman Juan Uribe, left fielder Juan Rivera and utility infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. on the DL.

Infielder Ivan DeJesus was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill Ellis’ roster spot.

Djokovic beats Federer, meets Nadal in final

ROME — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic edged Roger Federer on Saturday to set up another meeting with rival Rafael Nadal in the Italian Open final.

The defending champion at the Foro Italico, Djokovic beat Federer 6-2, 7-6 (4). Five-time winner Nadal eliminated fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 7-6 (6), 6-0 in the other semifinal.

The French Open, the only Grand Slam Djokovic didn’t win last year, begins next weekend.

Maria Sharapova defeated rising German player Angelique Kerber 6-3, 6-4 and will defend her title against French Open champion Li Na. The Chinese player advanced after Serena Williams withdrew shortly before their semifinal with a lower back injury.

Williams said the back problem affected her game earlier this week. But she said she’ll be ready for Roland Garros.

Chelsea beats Bayern Munich in penalty shootout

MUNICH — You can’t keep Didier Drogba down.

The charismatic striker was at the heart of Chelsea’s unlikely comeback victory in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on Saturday night, scoring the tying goal in the 88th minute and the winner on the final penalty kick of the 4-3 shootout.

With two minutes to go and Chelsea down 1-0 to the German team in its home stadium, Drogba soared high from a corner to head home the equalizer and force 30 minutes of extra time, which ended 1-1.

When it was still level after four penalty kicks each, the 34-year-old from the Ivory Coast, who makes a habit of scoring crucial goals, did so again, sliding home the winner and giving Chelsea its first Champions League title.
