Virgil Place

Virgil Place

Virgil Alan Place, 87, of Kawaihae, died March 14 at his residence. Born Oct. 24, 1924, in Crown Point, Ind., he was a physician, pharmaceutical executive for Lederdle Labs in New York, Syntex Corp. and ALZA Corp. in Palo Alto, Calif., founder of VIVUS Corp. in Mountain View, Calif., and Pua Mau Gardens in Kawaihae and an Army veteran.

He is survived by wife, Irina Place, of Kawaihae; daughters, Tamara Hutten, of Kila, Mont., Andrea Fournet, of Fayetteville, Ark., Nicola Place, of Diablo, Calif.; son, Virgil Place, of San Francisco; three granddaughters, one great-grandson.

Kyong Chew

Kyong Wo Joseph “Tutuman” Chew, 84, of Panaewa, died May 13 at Hilo Medical Center. Born July 8, 1927, in Kohala, he was a Navy veteran serving from 1944-49, a retired power plant controller at Pearl Harbor Shipyard on Oahu, Hilo manager for a private security firm and member of National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mason Scottish Rite and Shriner’s Aloha Temple.

Friends may call at 1 p.m. May 19 at the Haili Tent, Panaewa. An urn committal service will be at 1 p.m. May 22 at Punchbowl National Memorial of the Pacific Cemetery on Oahu.

He is survived by wife, Lorraine Chew, of Panaewa; son, Langford (Mary) Chew, of Kapolei, Oahu; daughters, Waonette Chew, Rayveen (Timothy) Waters, Violyna (Luiz) Chew-Fernandez, all of California, Marva Chew, of Panaewa, Jowett (Keith) Chew-Marumoto, of Hilo; hanai daughters, Sheila Streltzer, of Oahu, Suzie Alviso, of California; hanai sons, Walter Hall, of Oahu, Rodney Clarose, of California; 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Violet De Motta

Violet V. De Motta, 77, of Hilo, died May 12 at Hilo Medical Center Extended Care Facility. Born in Pepeekeo, she was a retired egg farmer at Fujimoto Egg Farm and a housekeeper.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. May 24 at St. Joseph Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. service.

She is survived by sons, Robert ( Mary) De Motta, Wayne De Motta, both of Keaau; daughters Louise Oliveira, of Pepeekeo, Bonny Rosa, of Hilo, Linda (Herbert Jr.) Victorino, of Kohala, Faye Miranda, of Kailua-Kona; sisters, Dorothy Farias, Genevieve Badua, both of Hilo; 18 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kauaheakeokauanomeha Lactaoen

Kauaheakeokauanomeha Jay Palapa Lactaoen, 19, of Waimea, died May 6 at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1993, in Kealakekua, he was a back waiter for Merriman’s Restaurant and member of Mana Christian Ohana Church and 43 Boiz Crew.

Friends may call at 2 p.m. May 25 at Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea for a 3 p.m. service. Family requests aloha attire, Kihei attire appropriate.

He is survived by parents, Jay (Kawehi) Lactaoen, of Waimea; brother, Kawika-Sheldon Lactaoen, of Waimea; sisters, Naomi Clarke, of Oregon, Napualei Palapala, of Waimea; paternal grandfather, Joseph Chang, of Hilo; paternal grandmother, Dora Lactaoen, of Waimea; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert Mendiola Sr.

Robert Donald Mendiola Sr., 88, of Kurtistown, died May 11 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 16, 1923, in Honolulu, he was a retired lieutenant for the Honolulu Police Department, security officer for Securitas at Hilo Airport, World War II Army veteran and member of Keaau Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Friends may call at 7:30 a.m. May 25 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo for a rosary and a 10:30 a.m. Mass. Burial follows at 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Annie Mendiola, of Kurtistown; daughters, Judy Lane, of Waikoloa, Penny Tada, of Lihue, Kauai, Debora (Keoni) Inciong, of Waipahu, Oahu; sons, Eric Mendiola, David Mendiola, Charles Mendiola, all of Kurtistown, Damien Mendiola, of Waimea, Kauai, Clyde Mendiola, of Waikoloa; 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
