Police arrest 24 for suspected DUI

Police arrested 24 drivers for suspected drunken driving between May 7 and Sunday; four were involved in traffic accidents and three were younger than 21.

Police have made 526 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 541 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Kona officers arrested a dozen motorists, South Hilo officers arrested six and Puna and South Kohala officers arrested two motorists in each district, according to police. Ka‘u and North Hilo officers arrested one driver in each district.

There have been 544 major accidents this year compared with 520 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with eight fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police. To date, according to police, four of those fatalities were related to drugs and one to alcohol.

Puna woman busted for herion possession

A Hilo judge found probable cause to charge a Puna woman with several drug crimes.

Catherine R. Kessaris, 58, of Orchidland remains in jail on a $1 million bond pending her May 25 initial appearance in the 3rd Circuit Court, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jason Skier said. Kessaris faces charges of promoting a dangerous drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and ownership prohibited.

Police arrested Kessaris May 10 at a Melekule Street home, after vice officers executed a search warrant. Police said they found about 1 pound of heroin, digital scales, packaging materials, two firearms and $5,200 in cash.

Lt. Burt Shimabukuro, of the Area I vice section, said officers acted on information provided to them in requesting the search warrant at the home.

A 52-year-old Keeau woman was arrested, then later released without charges.

Man rescued from North Kohala shoreline

A man who spent Monday night on a remote North Kohala shoreline was rescued Tuesday fatigued, but unharmed.

Fire rescue personnel responded around 7 a.m. Tuesday to a report of a missing beachgoer off Maluhia Road and determined the man had apparently scaled a 20- to 30-foot cliff on Monday, but was unable to climb back out, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

He spent the night on the shoreline and was extricated Tuesday morning by Chopper 1, according to the department. The man was reportedly fatigued, however, the department noted no injuries.
