A Keaau man died Thursday after reportedly being injured while surfing in lower Puna.
The victim has been identified as 42-year-old Nathan Keliikuli, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
At 10 a.m., officers responded to a report of a surfing accident at Pohoiki Beach and determined that Keliikuli had apparently fallen and hit his jaw on his surfboard. Bystanders, who reportedly found Keliikuli unconscious, brought him to shore and initiated CPR, according to police.
Hawaii Fire Department personnel then transported him in critical condition to Hilo Medical Center where he died at 11:13 a.m., according to police.
Police have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
