Letter carriers locally will collect bags of food donations left at mailboxes Saturday and deliver them to The Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank. Donations of nonperishable items are accepted. These include canned soups, meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and juices and boxed cereals, pasta and rice.

For more information, talk to a letter carrier or contact a local post office.

Gardening spaces workshop planned

Participants will learn how to make four different above-ground gardening growing spaces at a workshop planned from 9 a.m. to noon May 25 at One Island Sustainable Living Center in Honaunau. Raised beds can help those with little soil create nourishing gardens. They can also increase gardening’s accessibility for people suffering from back pain or with certain disabilities. Using recycled materials and low-cost solutions, presenters will show participants how to “garden up.”

All ages and abilities welcome. The $20 workshop donation will go to One Island’s Summer Youth Camp scholarship fund.
