Chamalian teaching drawing, painting

The county Department of Parks and Recreation’s Culture and Community Arts Section is taking registration for beginning drawing and painting classes taught by Karen Chamalian.

Classes are from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, May 2 to June 6, in the back classroom at Hale Halawai. Students ages 12 and older can attend.

The cost for the six-session class is $30. Participants will need to purchase their own supplies and should call for a supplies list.

Class enrollment is limited, and registration is required. To reserve a space or for more information, call Bert at 961-8706.

Royal Kona hosts charity event Saturday

The Royal Kona Resort presents a Cinco de Mayo food and craft fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the luau grounds. Visitors to this free event may partake in Mexican cuisine while perusing items available from local vendors. Proceeds from food and beverage sales will benefit the Hawaii Island Visitor Industry Charity Walk, the largest, single-day fundraising event in the state.

Craft and clothing vendors are encouraged to participate. Contact Criste Ching, the resort’s assistant human resources manager, at 930-3246 for information on space availability and pricing.

The charity walk will take place May 12 at the Queens’ MarketPlace in Waikoloa. The event features a 3.2-mile walk or a 4.1-mile race. Pledge forms are available at the Royal Kona Resort Human Resources Office. For a minimum $35 donation, participants receive a T-shirt and entry into the event.

Ka‘u arts and crafts event Saturday

The Ka‘u Spring Fling, sponsored by the Ka‘u School of Arts and Punaluu Bake Shop, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Naalehu bakery’s pavilion and garden area. Vendor booths are available for the arts and crafts event.

Suicide prevention group meeting

The Prevent Suicide West Hawaii Task Force meets from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room at the West Hawaii Community Health Center located on the corner of Hualalai Road and Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona. All are welcome to attend who have an interest in preventing suicide in the community.
