Free cancer retreat begins Monday

Kokolulu Farm and Cancer Retreats in Hawi is offering a group cancer retreat Monday to May 6. The retreat is offered at no charge to Big Island residents.

Lucas leads courses in traditional healing art

Classes in Medical Qigong, an ancient component of traditional Chinese medicine used to improve both physical and mental healing through a focused practice of movement, postures and breathing techniques, are planned for May in Volcano Village.

Under the guidance of Priya Lucas, students are invited to experience a six week course in Chi-Lel Qigong, a form of Medical Qigong. With nearly 20 years of experience and study under the masters of Chi-Lel Qigong, Lucas now shares her expertise and passion for this ancient healing art.

A free introductory class is offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 10. Beginning Qigong begins May 17 and continues from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays through June 21. Intermediate Qigong begins May 2 and continues from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays through June 13. All classes are held at Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village. Tuition is $70, or $63 for VAC members. Class size is limited, and preregistration is required.

Free family reading program at library

The Friends of the Libraries, Kona is hosting “Books are Building Blocks” from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. This month’s edition of the free family read aloud program features Ann Goody of the Three Ring Ranch Animal Sanctuary and special guest animals. Learn how to approach and talk to animals as well as how animals think and perceive what people do. Special books about animals will be featured.

Parents must attend the program with their children. Children are divided into age-specific reading groups from kindergarten through seventh grade and above.

Registration takes place from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in front of the library, Goody and her animals will be present from 5 to 5:30 and the reading begins at 5:30. At 6, families will meet on the lanai for free refreshments, prizes and books.

Kona Toastmasters meets Tuesday

Kona Toastmasters meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at Suite Possibilities, 75-5737 Kuakini Highway, No. 102.

Toastmasters offers peer support and training in the art of communication. Members have opportunities to develop leadership skills by hosting segments of the meeting and taking on decision-making positions.
