Old styrofoam, cans, Christmas lights, newspapers and cardboard saved from the trash aren’t the typical medium choices for artists or fashion designers. However, this junk and more was transformed and proudly displayed Saturday in Hawi at two events: the Trash Bash and Get Trashy Fashion Show.
The Trash Bash, held at Upstairs at the Mill, was started to help raise awareness about our landfills and trash management in a fun and creative way. The committee’s mission statement is “To entertain, educate and inspire Kohala residents to expand their recycling and conservation efforts.” At least 100 people attended the annual art show.
The fashion show at the Hawi Farmers Market proved trash is tres chic. Less than a dozen children either brought or created costumes out of recyclable items, which they later paraded around in.
