Beast cancer patients meeting Tuesday
The breast cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s Restaurant. People newly diagnosed with breast cancer and breast cancer survivors are welcome, as well as interested caregivers and supportive family members.
The group meets to share cancer-related issues and lend support to one another.
Women are encouraged to learn about breast cancer risks and early detection to help make informed decisions with their doctors about breast health.

Park hosts program on Hawaiian flowers
U.S. Geological Survey botanist and author Linda Pratt will present the story of the amazing and beautiful native flowering plants, both endemic and indigenous, that thrive in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The program, “Hawaiian Flowers: A Celebration of World Heritage,” is a special After Dark in the Park presentation beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.
Because it’s National Park Week (April 21 to 29), there is no fee to enter the park.
In 1987, Hawaii Volcanoes was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due in part to the high number of endemic species it protects. This year, the park celebrates its 25th anniversary of World Heritage inscription by offering a series of special programs about the natural and cultural resources in the park.
The park is one of only 21 World Heritage sites in the United States, and 936 worldwide. Today, people from around the world come to experience its natural and cultural wonders, found nowhere else on Earth.
Pratt is co-author of the book,” Hawaii’s Plants and Animals: Biological Sketches of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.”
Stars shine at Hoku Concert Series benefit
“It’s All About Passion,” a private concert benefiting the Kona Hospital Foundation, is planned for Saturday at an oceanfront estate. Chelsea Basler and Brian Major will provide the entertainment, singing both operatic and popular tunes. A reception by Paradise Gourmet Catering precedes the show.
The Kona Hospital Foundation contributed more than $283,000 for hospital improvements last year from fundraisers, donations and grants. Visit khfhawaii.org for more information.

Waimea Relay for Life planned for Saturday
Teams of Waimea residents will gather at 6 p.m. Saturday at Waimea Community Park for an overnight relay against cancer. Relay For Life is a family-oriented event where participants walk relay-style around the track and take part in activities off the track. Teams gather donations prior to the event.
The public is invited to attend a luminaria ceremony at 9 p.m. To honor the community’s cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease, survivors and event participants light candles before the ceremony begins. Those unable to attend but wishing to purchase a candle may do so at relayforlife.org/waimeahi. Candles include a personal message and cost $5.
Funds raised at Relay For Life enable the American Cancer Society to support local services and resources for cancer patients and their families. Funds also support research and community programs designed to teach people how to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
