World Book
Night is Monday
The Big Island, along with 6,000 towns and cities across America, will participate in World Book Night, Monday. Volunteer book lovers will help promote reading by personally giving a half million free copies of books they enjoy to new or light readers. West Hawaii volunteers will pick up books at Kona Stories bookstore and then distribute them throughout the community.
The books were chosen by a panel of booksellers and librarians through several rounds of voting. The printing of the free books was possible due to the generosity of the authors, publishers and book manufacturing companies. Titles distributed through Kona Stories include “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexie, “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card and “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. Sally Bobb, Viki Von Fumetti, Maria Moore-Bartol, Jackie Andresen, Tish Rockwood and Tami Sprauge will hand out books on the Big Island.

Marijuana talk at Tutu’s House Wednesday
From 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tutu’s House in Waimea, Charles Ray will present an educational and informational program on why the war on drugs is not working.
Ray’s lecture will explore the use of marijuana as the most commonly used and abused illicit drug in the world today. He will discuss contradictory national, state and local policies, as well as other legal issues. Ray’s talk will focus on the effects of marijuana use in a teenage brain and in the brain of an adult. He will look at the scientific research as to how marijuana affects various parts of the brain and what the individual and societal implications for that are. A short question-and-answer session follows the presentation. There are no fees for Tutu’s House programs, but tax-deductible donations are welcome. Call 885-6777 to register.
Visit tutushouse.org for a calendar of programs offered at the Waimea-based community health and wellness resource center.
