Kohala Elementary holds spelling bee
Kohala Elementary School 3rd-, 4th- and 5th-graders participated in the school’s first spelling bee. Using words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee word list and Webster’s Dictionary, pronouncer Charlie P. Gooch, Jr. led the students in the fun, but challenging, exercise that helps students improve spelling skills, learn new words and develop correct English usage. Judges were North Kohala librarian Janet Lam, retired KHS teacher Christopher Lee Brown and KES volunteer Kay Aldrich.
WHEA Earth Day lightbulb exchange
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21, West Hawaii Explorations Academy will be doing a light bulb exchange at the Earth Day Fair on Keauhou Beach Resort’s luau grounds. The public is invited to bring as many old incandescent bulbs they have to exchange for free CFLs. Also at the fair, WHEA will perform a marine debris puppet show and present informational environmental poster boards.
Browne chosen to design art for Kohala Elementary
Sculptor Sean Browne has been selected for Kohala Elementary’s $75,000 Art in Public Places Grant awarded by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. Browne, a local artist who has created several significant sculptures around the state, recently spent two weeks sharing his manao with students and staff on campus. He will lead the design and creation of a permanent sculpture to be placed fronting the office for all to see, interact with, and learn from in the spring of 2014.

Kealakehe High council to meet
Kealakehe High School’s Community Council meets from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the staff cafeteria dining room. This is a time change.
