A Sunday morning fire caused about $1,000 in damage to a roofed garage of a single-family house on Kekauonohi Place in Pahoa, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
The home was unoccupied when the fire broke out at around 9:17 a.m. in the garage, which was used as an outside kitchen. Neighbors tried to extinguish it unsuccessfully before retreating when the flames came in contact propane tanks stored in the garage. No injuries were reported, the department stated.
Upon arriving at the scene 10 minutes later, firefighters found flames and smoke coming from the structure. They were able to bring the fire under control at 9:35 a.m. and extinguished it at 10:21 a.m.. The cause was undetermined as of press time, the department stated.
