Teao Buehler struck out 10 batters in a complete-game, four-hitter as Kealakehe’s baseball team snapped Konawaena’s 19-game Big Island Interscholastic Federation winning streak with an 8-2 victory Saturday at Kealakehe.
Buehler, a junior, walked five batters in a 127-pitch outing.
The Wildcats, who went undefeated on the way to their first BIIF baseball championship since 1972 last season, hadn’t lost a league contest since falling to Kamehameha-Hawaii 10-9 in the 2010 BIIF Division II final.
“He was throwing us off with his slider,” Konawaena manager Lloyd Fujino said. “But he was throwing hard, too.”
Austin Galigo went 3-for-4, and Pohaku Dela Cruz was 2-for-3 for the Waveriders (5-7). Both drove in two runs.
Lennox Costales was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Freshman Shelton Grace, who relieved junior Domonic Morris in the third inning, took the loss for Konawaena (9-1).
A Wildcats team that lost leadoff hitter Race Gustafson to a hamstring injury early in the season got thinner before the team faced the Waveriders.
Both Kileona Manzano and Sage Aoki will miss the rest of the season because of what Fujino called “disciplinary reasons.”
Manzano, a slugging left fielder, was hitting over .500 out of the cleanup spot this season.
Fujino said only three players — Makana Canda (third base), Evyn Yamaguchi (catcher) and Vinny Chang (first base) — were playing in their regular positions Saturday.
“For the boys, I told them maybe it might be a good loss,” Fujino said. “Now they know what it feels like to lose and that they can practice harder to get in the groove.”
