New publication illustrates a
century of volcano science in Hawaii

This year marks 100 years of continuous volcano and earthquake monitoring at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. As part of HVO’s centennial celebration, the USGS has published a new general-interest publication, “The Story of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory — A Remarkable First 100 Years of Tracking Eruptions and Earthquakes,” by Janet L. Babb, James P. Kauahikaua and Robert I. Tilling.

This 62-page, full-color booklet recounts the founding of HVO, the first volcano observatory in the United States, and its pioneering achievements in the science of volcano monitoring over the past century. Written in a reader-friendly style, the booklet will appeal to anyone interested in earth science and volcanoes.

The booklet, available online as a free PDF file, can be found at pubs.usgs.gov/gip/135/. A limited number of free printed booklets are available for a $5 handling fee from the USGS online store, or by writing to USGS Information Services, Box 25286, Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225; telephone: 1-888-ASK-USGS; email: infoservices@usgs.gov.

Grant to help fund senior health fair
May 20

North Hawaii Community Hospital has received a $5,000 grant from the Richard Smart Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation to support its 24th annual North Hawaii Senior Health Fair. Ken Wood, president and CEO of North Hawaii Community Hospital, said the funds will be used to support the community outreach event — often the only time seniors receive health screenings by medical professionals.

Complimentary screenings offered at this event include hearing, vision and oral tests, stroke risk assessment, cholesterol and glucose checks and blood tests by Clinical Laboratories of Hawaii. Health education will also be available from several vendors including Tutu’s House, Hawaii Fire Department, American Cancer Society, North Hawaii Hospice, Kohala Home Health Care, Diabetes Wellness Center, Foodland and Legal Shield.

Previously held in November, the health fair has been moved to May 20, in support of National Senior Health and Fitness Day. Registration for the event at North Hawaii Community Hospital is open from 8 to 11:30 a.m., with lunch, bingo and prizes to follow.
