A Kona man is facing robbery and drug charges for allegedly removing money from a sleeping man’s pocket and then brandishing a knife Wednesday in Kailua-Kona.

Marcus Anthony Winkler, 31, of no permanent address but known to frequent Kailua-Kona, was charged Thursday afternoon with first-degree robbery, promoting a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia, according to the Hawaii Police Department. His bail was set at $70,000.

A 43-year-old man, also of no permanent address and known to frequent Kailua-Kona, reported to police around 3:30 a.m. that he had been sleeping outside a Hanama Place business when he woke up to find an acquaintance removing money from his pants pocket, according to police. The 43-year-old reportedly struggled with the man before the 31-year-old brandished a pocket knife and then fled with the cash.

No one was injured in the struggle, according to police.

Five hours later, an officer located Winkler on Alii Drive and arrested him. Police reportedly located a glass smoking pipe with a crystalline residue believed to be methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia on his person.

He remains held at the Kona police cellblock pending an initial court appearance on Friday, according to police.
