AAUW Kona announces scholarships
The American Association of University Women Kona Branch will award two scholarships of $2000 each this spring to female high school seniors in West Hawaii who will be attending a two- or four-year college or university.
The criteria for choosing scholarship recipients are academic achievement; involvement in extracurricular high school activities, community organizations, and employment experience; educational and career goals; and financial need. Application packets must be postmarked by April 18 and are available from high school counselors or at aauwkona.org. These scholarships are unique in that the funds may be used for anything that enables the student to achieve her academic goals.
Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women is the oldest and largest women’s organization in the country. AAUW promotes equity for women, education and self-development over the life span, and positive societal change. Montessori school open house Wednesday
Families of current and prospective students between the ages of 15 months and 6 years old are invited to attend an open house from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at 74-978 Manawalea Street, Kailua-Kona. Families may visit classrooms, meet current families, learn about the school and its programs, including financial aid opportunities, and meet faculty members and administration.
Part of the West Hawaii community since 1980, the school provides quality education using the principles and methods of Dr. Maria Montessori. The classroom environments allow children to develop at their own speed, according to each child’s own capacities in a noncompetitive atmosphere. Learning takes place through the child’s own discovery and experience. Hawaii Montessori Schools has been recognized on the state and federal levels as being an excellent provider of early childhood education.
For more information, contact Angeline Geldhof, executive director, or Maya Wheaton, campus director, at 329-0700 or email kona@hawaiimontessori.org. For more about Hawaii Montessori Schools’ programs, visit hawaiimontessori.org.
