Marine biologist Kaipo Perez III provides an updated ecological evaluation of coral reef resources at Kahaluu Bay in a Puana Ka Ike lecture from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Keauhou Beach Resort ballroom. In the past three years, over 200 sites in or around the bay have been surveyed for a range of physical and biological factors by the Coral Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program and its partners. Perez will discuss the survey project and give a research summary.

Special tour visits some of the rarest birds on Earth

Join the Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from 9 to 11 a.m. April 16 for a special tour of the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center. KBCC, which isn’t open to the general public, is one of two centers operated by the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conser-vation Research as part of its Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program. Using intensive captive propagation and release techniques, the program aims to re-establish self-sustaining populations of critically endangered birds, including the alala which is extinct in the wild. The tour will be led by KBCC research coordinator Rosanna Leighton.

The program costs $20 for FHVNP members and $30 for nonmembers. A percentage of fees collected will be donated to KBCC. Students are half-price. To register for the tour, call 985-7373 or visit fhvnp.org.

Plant sale, Earth Day celebration April 21

Waimea Nature Park will hold a plant sale and Earth Day celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 21. Homegrown plants and native plants propagated in the greenhouse will be for sale. Local vendors will be selling homemade arts and crafts. Cupcakes, cookies and brownies baked by park volunteers will be available. There will also be demonstrations of composting and vermiculture and a free zumba class that begins at 9:15.

Waimea Nature Park is located directly behind Canada France Hawaii Telescope Offices off Mamalahoa Hwy, across from Waimea Elementary School.

Hawaii Community FCU announces April events

A free seminar, “College for Adults,” will be held from 8 a.m. until noon April 14 in the John Y. Iwane Training Room at Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union’s Kaloko location, 73-5611 Olowalu Street. Attendees will be informed about the college application process and be eligible to register for a number of free follow-up workshops.
