Hospital offers classes for health care workers

Kona Community Hospital will offer Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers on April 9 and 23. The class will run from 8 a.m. until noon and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Classes are located in the hospital’s Conference Room 3.

The hospital will also offer a Pediatric Advanced Life Support update renewal course. Scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 21 in Conference Room 2 and 3, the class is designed to give health care providers the ability to treat seriously ill or injured children. Pediatric Advanced Life Support provider course completion within the past two years is required. In addition, demonstrating knowledge of CPR skills will be required during the course.

Students serving breakfasts, lunches

Students in the Culinary Arts Department at Hawaii Community College West Hawaii are serving breakfast from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the school. No reservations are required and carry-out is available. The cost is $6 per person.

The second-year students are serving lunch on Friday, based on fine dining/classical cuisine dishes.

Lunches are served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and are $18 per person. Reservations will be taken beginning at 8 a.m. Monday the week of the luncheon. Call 322-4850. Changes or cancellations should be made at least 48 hours ahead of time. Tips are welcome. The schedule and pricing are subject to change.

Kona town meeting slated Tuesday

A Kona town meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Makaeo Pavilion at Old Kona Airport Park. Guest speakers Mayor Billy Kenoi and his cabinet members, as well as Hawaii County Council Chairman Dominic Yagong will be on hand to answer questions and share thoughts and plans for the future of the island. Light refreshments will be served.

Mauna Kea SWCD meets Thursday

The Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Natural Resources Conservation Service Waimea Service Center, 67-1185 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 148. Shopping bag
exchange planned

Hawaii Electric Light Co., KTA Super Stores and KWXX are sponsoring shopping bag exchanges islandwide. At the “Three Bag Re-bag” events, customers can trade three plastic grocery bags for one reusable shopping tote. Each person can receive up to three totes in exchange for nine bags. Plastic bags must be tied into a knot before the exchange.

Students from Pahoa High School, Parker School and Kahakai Elementary School will also be on hand to swap incandescent bulbs for CFLs. Three Bag Re-bag events are planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 14 at KTA Waimea; from 2 to 6 p.m. April 20 at KTA Waikoloa Village; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at KTA Kailua-Kona.

VWs featured at Saturday Cruise Night

Lanihau Center’s Cruise Night from 6 until 9 p.m. April 14 will feature the Volkswagen marque. The Big Island VW Club will have a display under the DJ tent with information about its upcoming Bug-In at the Hilo Dragstrip. More than 50 parking stalls will be reserved for owners of other unique vehicles.

This month’s featured nonprofit is the North Hawaii Drug-Free Coalition. The community groups from Hamakua, Kohala, Waikola and Waimea that make up the organization strive to keep kids drug-free by involving them in activities and programs that stress clean living. One of their projects is the Roots Skatepark in Hawi. Skaters will perform after a Volkswagen-led 7:30 parade through the parking lots of Lanihau Center. Also, Tommy Johnson of Honokaa will have his 565 cubic inch Fiat altered-class race car on hand and will fire it up after the skate demonstration.

G.Cruz from KWXX/B93-B97 radio will provide the beat for the evening with classic rock ‘n’ roll.
