Officer Sharon Yoon, a four-year veteran of the Hawaii Police Department, is being recognized for her outstanding work during the month of January by the Kona Crime Prevention Committee at its monthly luncheon on Wednesday.

On January 1, Officer Yoon was assigned to investigate a burglary in the Kona district. A week later, the suspect and his girlfriend were located, arrested and charged for first-degree burglary and second-degree theft. During this investigation, Officer Yoon was able to link the man to burglaries in other parts of Hawaii Island. A second man was also identified and arrested.

During the month of December, Officer Yoon obtained a search warrant for a residence in Kona after observing numerous marijuana plants growing on the property. A search of the property resulted in the confiscation of 96 marijuana plants, 1,198 grams of dried and processed marijuana, two grams of hashish, related drug paraphernalia, a gun and ammunition and the arrest of a man.

Officer Yoon’s work embodies the department’s mission and vision statement and core values of integrity, professionalism and community satisfaction. Officer Yoon has proven to be an asset to the Hawaii Police Department by striving for excellence in her work and has demonstrated a high level of competence during her investigations.

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee encourages and supports our police department in their efforts to prevent crime, deter potential criminals and enforce our laws. The committee also provides needed police equipment for use by our Kona District officers when department funds cannot support those needs.

The guest speaker will be Dick Dresie of Kona Aloha Patrol, a volunteer citizens’ patrol aimed at providing safe streets and a friendly environment for residents, shop owners, employees and visitors. The lunch sponsor is retired Police Major John Dawrs.

The public is invited to attend the Officer of the Month luncheons held on the first Wednesday of each month. The cost of the luncheon is $20, all inclusive at Huggo’s restaurant. Reservations are necessary and may be made by contacting Liz Holey at lholey@hawaii.rr.com or 443-7708.
