Hospital auxiliary
hosts rummage sale

The hospital auxiliary will hold a rummage sale, bake sale and silent auction from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 31 at Kona Community Hospital to raise funds for the auxiliary’s nursing scholarship program. Donations of household items are being solicited and will be accepted up to the morning of the sale.

Life coach featured speaker March 28

Desirée Watson, a life and business coach, is giving a talk March 28 at Island Naturals in Kailua-Kona. Watson has more than 25 years of experience in personal development and entrepreneurship and specializes in helping people clarify their priorities and clear away the blocks to success.

The event runs from 7:45 until 9:15 a.m. and is hosted by the Kona Krew chapter of Business Network International, which meets at Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street. Creative lighting focus of photography group’s monthly meeting

The Kona Underwater Photographic Society will hold its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. March 28 at the Imin Center in Holualoa.

This month, the mini-comp subject will be creative lighting. There will be no guest speaker. The members’ night portion of the meeting will allow members to share their best recent work. The images must be in digital format either on memory stick, DVD or CD with maximum image dimensions of 1024 x 768 pixels. Members are reminded sharing is limited to three minutes per person. As always, the public is invited to attend the meeting.

The Imin Center is approximately ¼ mile north of Holualoa town on the mauka side of Mamalahoa Highway. The gate to the parking lot and the doors to the meeting room will open at 6:30 p.m. for setup.

Soroptimist holds annual awards dinner

Soroptimist International of Kona is honoring four recipients at its annual awards dinner at 6 p.m. March 27 at the Royal Kona Resort. The dinner is $30 per person, which includes parking. The public is invited to attend.

Kealakehe High School sophomore Lindsay Christine Milke is the winner of the Violet Richardson Award. This award is given to a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action.

Milke is a member of the Kealekehe High Interact Club. Through this club, Milke has volunteered with Ironman and is involved with the Meet and Eat community dinners program. As the award recipient, she will also receive $1,000 and the Interact Club will receive $250.

The recipient of this year’s Youth Citizenship Award and $500 prize is senior Caitlin Howard-Gomez of Kealakehe High School. Caitlin is actively involved with the Aloha Performing Arts Company and president of the Aloha Teen Theatre group. She is also involved with Kealakehe’s student council.

The Women’s Opportunity Award is given to a woman who is enrolled in an undergraduate or vocational skills training program and is her family’s primary financial supporter. This year’s recipients are Wanda Gomes and Stephanie Briseno-Sanchez.

Briseno-Sanchez is currently enrolled at University of Hawaii Community College West Hawaii working toward becoming a social worker. She will receive a $1,200 scholarship.

Gomes is currently enrolled at Hawaii Community College earning her associate degree in early childhood education. Gomes will receive an $800 scholarship.

Elderly recreation classes begin March 27

Elderly recreation classes run in 10-week sessions beginning March 27, excluding holidays. They are open to anyone aged 55 and older. Most registration fees are just $10 per session and can be paid in advance at the West Hawaii Civic Center or to the instructor on the first day of class. Some classes require preregistration.
