Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful is encouraging people of all ages to demonstrate that they love where they live by volunteering for the 2012 Great American Cleanup.

Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful is encouraging people of all ages to demonstrate that they love where they live by volunteering for the 2012 Great American Cleanup.

Throughout the months of March, April and May, an anticipated 1,200 Keep America Beautiful affiliates and participating organizations will bring together an estimated 3.8 million volunteers to produce more vibrant, beautiful, cleaner and safer towns and cities.

Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful, and its affiliates’ volunteers throughout Hawaii will beautify and green neighborhoods by planting trees, flowers and community gardens. They will remove graffiti, clean up litter and debris from public lands, and host recycling and e-cycling drives.

The 2012 theme— Green Starts Here – is a call to action that civic leaders and volunteer groups can use to create more sustainable communities. Focusing their volunteer efforts on activities surrounding waste reduction, recycling, beautification and community greening, the cleanup will help foster unity and strengthen community bonds. The national movement will be highlighted by an action day on April 28, featuring coordinated events in cities across the country.

In 2011, more than 6,000 volunteers across Hawaii took part in numerous Great American Cleanup events, collecting thousands of pounds of litter and debris, cleaning parks, public lands, open spaces and roadsides as well as hundreds of miles of shoreline.

Contact Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful at 579-9308, or its Big Island affiliate, Keep Hawaii Beautiful, at 969-2012.
