Kona Stampede Rodeo this weekend

Kona Stampede Rodeo this weekend

The Kona Roping Club and approximately 250 contestants will participate in the Kona Stampede Rodeo, which will take place Saturday and Sunday at Honaunau Rodeo Arena.

The two-day rodeo features the following events: poo wai u, double mugging, bull riding, calf roping, dally team roping, dally team 90s, calf mugging, breakaway roping and barrel racing. Slack roping to qualify for the show begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, and the rodeo follows at noon. The start time on Sunday is also noon.

There will be a concession stand.

General admission is $7, and children under age 11 may enter free. For more information, call 323-2388.

Canoe race set for March 24 in Kapaa

Tiger Canoe Heihei Waa canoe race will be held March 24 at Kapaa Beach Park. The race will consist of two courses, long and short. The long course will begin at 9 a.m. at Keokea Beach Park and end at Kapaa Beach Park. The short course will begin and end at Kapaa Beach Park at 9 a.m. Race founder and fiberglass canoe builder March Taylor will feature his three-man canoe, the Kauhola V-3.

Kai Opua Canoe Club starts practice for 2012 regatta season

Kai Opua Canoe Club will start practice for most divisions this week, and all practices will be held at Kailua Pier. Novice women A and B started on Monday, and other women’s divisions will start at 5:30 p.m. March 19.

In the youth division, girls started practice Monday, boys 12-14 will start today, and boys 15-18 start Thursday. Coed children under 12 practice Tuesday and Thursday. All youth division practices are held from 3:45 to 5 p.m.

Keauhou CC practice begins March 19

Keauhou Canoe Club youth outrigger canoe paddling begins Monday and March 21. Boys and girls 12-and-under will practice from 4 to 5 p.m., and girls 12-18 will practice from 4 to 6 pm. Boys 12-18 begin practice on March 20 and 22. The club is located at the bottom of Kamehameha III Road at Keauhou Bay. Call Nathan Libarios a 937-5390, or Gina Torres at 990-1973 with any questions.

Beginner golf
classes for women

Golf professional Rob Wohlgemuth will offer a five-week series of beginner golf lessons for women at Makalei Golf Club beginning April 7.

The class meets five consecutive Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m., and the cost of instruction is $50. The class is open to all women who are interested in the basics of golf. Call Wohlgemuth at 937-0130 to enroll.

Emily T. Gail Show

Janet Higa-Miller, co-owner of Bike Works Kona and Bike Works Beach & Sport at Queens’ Marketplace, is a guest on this week’s Emily T. Gail Show, available at espnhawaii.com under “lineup” or at facebook.com/emilytgailtalkstory.

Higa-Miller will discuss Waikoloa Lavaman Sunset 5K Run/Walk scheduled for 5 p.m. March 30. Higa-Miller will also have information on the weekly community bike rides for beginners through seasoned riders in Kona and at Waikoloa Beach Resort.

Also, Jeff Manzo and Andrea Bess, also affiliated with Bike Works Beach and Sport, will discuss some ways to encourage family members and friends into the sport of biking and offer some suggestions for safety. New road bicyclist Aimee Paret will discuss her experiences.

In addition, Sean “Peaman” Padgett will be a guest, along with “Papa Pea” Gene Power and others associated with Frozen Pea Productions. They will discuss the Kailua-Kona tradition of Peaman events that date back to 1987.

Keauhou Canoe Club $1,000 scholarship

The Keauhou Canoe Club will offer two $1,000 scholarships to any West Hawaii graduating senior who was a member of a high school paddling team or club-level paddling organization within the past 18 months.

The first is an academic scholarship awarded to a student with a minimum 2.9 grade-point average. Transcripts are required.

The second scholarship is the Mike Haines Memorial Merit Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who has contributed to his or her paddling club or to the community at large through leadership, volunteerism and service. Students may apply for only one scholarship.

Bicycle time
trial upcoming

Hawaii Cycling Club will be sponsoring a free, 12-mile time trial in Waikoloa at 8 a.m. Saturday. Registration will begin at 7:15 a.m. at Bike Works Beach & Sport in the Queens’ Marketplace Waikoloa Beach Resort.

Big Island Candies tournament sold out

The Big Island Candies Senior Golf Tournament. scheduled for May 11 at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course, has sold out. Registration is now closed for the tournament. Any additional applications that are turned in at the Kamana Senior Center or the West Hawaii Civic Center will be placed on a wait list and addressed if there are any cancellations.
