Amelia Burgess

Amelia Burgess

Amelia Louise Kalanikauhookahi Burgess, 97, of Kailua-Kona, formerly of Honolulu, died Feb. 9. She was a dress maker and fashion couturier, with her own label Kalani, a longtime manager of Kona Banyan Court, and a former Hulihee Palace docent and keeper of collections. She was also a member of Kawaiahao Church, the Daughters of Hawaii, Aha Hui Kaahumanu, Kona Hawaiian Civic Club and Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. March 6 at Kawaiahao Church. Visitation begins at 9:45 a.m. and burial is at 1 p.m. at Oahu Cemetery. A reception will follow at Hanaiakamalama, Queen Emma Summer Palace. A celebration of life begins at 11 a.m. March 11 at Hulihee Palace in Kailua-Kona. The family requests aloha attire be worn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daughters of Hawaii.

She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, including Ihilani Burgess Chun Staton, Judith Maile Burgess, Emily Ulu Burgess Matsumoto, Kaliko Chun, William Lota Burgess, Francis Burgess, Reynard Burgess, Randall Burgess, Rodney K. Burgess III, Kamana Seymour and caregiver Panana Alden.

Hilarion Palacol

Hilarion Palacol, 96, of Papaikou, died March 5 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Oct. 21, 1915, in San Ildelfonso, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a retired tractor operator for the former Mauna Kea Sugar Co., Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church member and Papaikou Filipino Catholic Club member.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. March 11 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Papaikou, where a funeral Mass begins at 2:30 p.m., followed by a burial at Mauna Kea Memorial Park. The family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by sons, Edmundo (Christine) Palacol, of Papaikou, Renato (Edna) Palacol, of Papaikou; hanai daughter, Delores Hagland, of California; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wonderlyn Ching

Wonderlyn Leimamo Cho Ching, 60, of Pearl City, Oahu, died Feb. 14 at The Queen’s Medical Center. Born Nov. 8, 1951, in Kona, she was a Salon 808 nail technician, Stoneridge Towing employee and Hula Halau Kealakapawa dancer.

A celebration of her life will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 11 at Keehi Lagoon Memorial Park’s DAV Hall. The family requests aloha attire be worn. Lei and flowers are welcome. Inurnment at St. Benedict’s Church in Honaunau will be held at a later date.

She is survived by fiance, Warren Fong, of Pearl City; mother, Violet Bishop, of Wailuku, Maui; maternal grandmother, Lily Bush, of Kailua-Kona; brother, Eugene (Cynnamon) Cho, of Pukalani, Maui; sisters, Nora (George) Sheridan, of Keaau, Donnafaye (Tommy) Gamurot, of Kahului, Maui, Lily (Edwin) Kipu, of Fern Acres; 11 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Tokuko Tagami

Tokuko Tagami, 90, of Hilo, died March 4 at her residence in Hilo. Born Nov. 24, 1921, in Hawaii, she was a nurse at former Dr. Matayoshi’s office in Hilo. She was also a member of the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Kyodan, Fujinkai and Hoyukai.

Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. March 12 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo, where a memorial service begins at 9:30 a.m. Urn committal service and burial will take place at noon at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2 in Hilo. The family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by sons, Mark (Charlene) Tagami, of Hilo, Guy Tagami, of Hilo; brothers, Fukuo (Aiko) Nakai, of Pearl City, James Hiroo (Yuriko) Nakai, of Los Angeles, Calif.; sisters, Tomiko Yoshimura, of Hilo, Fujiko Dochin, of Waimea, Elaine Aiko (Wight Yoshito) Sensui, of Honolulu; two grandchildren; numerous nephews and nieces.

Masuo Hatakeyama

Masuo “Sam” Hatakeyama, 94, of Waimea, died March 2 at Hale Hoola Hamakua in Honokaa. Born April 18, 1917, in Honokaa, he was a retired Honokaa Sugar Co. journeyman mechanic. He was also member of Annunciation Catholic Church, Hamakua Young Farmers, ILWU Pensioners’ Club and Hawaiian Civic Club.

Friends may call at 8 a.m. March 15 at Annunciation Catholic Church in Waimea for a 10 a.m. Mass. Cremation follows. The family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by daughter, Alma (John Englemann) Hatakeyama, of Honolulu; granddaughters, Charlene (Dan) Mersburgh, Marsha (Ian Kalili) Hatakeyama, both of Kona; grandson, Matthew (Reene) Hatakeyama, of Washington State; seven great-grandchildren.

Susan Santana

Susan Jane Santana, 70, of Waimea, died Feb. 27 at her residence. Born May 10, 1941, in Johnstown, Pa., she was a former housekeeper at Kamuela Inn and Aston Waikoloa.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 17 at the Kahilu Town Hall in Waimea for an 11 a.m. memorial service. The family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

She is survived by son, Leo (Lei) Santana, of Maui; daughters, Tammy (Terri) Santana, of Honolulu, Debra (Ian) Santana, of Hilo, Bernadette Santana, of Waimea, Maria Santana, of Hilo; brothers, Lyle Beckley Jr., John Beckley, Thomas Beckley, William Beckley, Robert Beckley, all of the mainland; sisters, Patricia Fox, Margaret Watson, Pauline Steward, all of the mainland; 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kenneth Kadooka

Kenneth “Ken” Kikuo Kadooka, 68, of Honaunau, died Feb. 10 at Kona Community Hospital. Born Dec. 17, 1943, in Kealakekua, he was a retired fire equipment operator for the Hawaii Department of Transportation — Keahole International Airport Crash Fire Rescue, a mechanic for the former Aloha Airlines and an Army veteran. He is also a member of Honaunau Kumiai No. 3 and Kona Hongwanji Mission in Kealakekua.

Visitation will take place at 3 p.m. March 18 at Kona Hongwanji Mission, where a service begins at 4 p.m. The family requests no flowers.

He is survived by wife, Jean Kadooka, of Honaunau; son, Scott (Keala) Kadooka, of Waimea; daughters, Kimberly (Eric) Kunitomo, of Kealakekua, Joy (Travis) Hamada, of Mililani, Oahu; brother, Ray (Harriet) Kadooka, of Pearl City, Oahu; seven grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Teruko Okada

Teruko Okada, 97, of Hilo, died Feb. 28 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born Aug. 25, 1914, in Lihue, Kauai, she was a homemaker, Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin member and Buddhist Women’s Association member.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by daughter, Eleanor Okada, of Hilo; numerous nieces and nephews.
