Artist Lynn Capell will teach a six-week series of plein air oil painting classes, “Wet Paint!,” to be held on Sunday mornings beginning March 11 (there will be no class Easter Sunday). Beginners, as well as intermediate painters, are welcome and the sessions are also available as “drop in classes,” if a student is unable to attend the complete series. Capell will walk participants through the steps needed to take home a small finished painting in three to four hours. The classes are sponsored by the Donkey Mill Art Center, where Capell is a faculty member and working artist.

Having grown up in Florida, Capell is enamored of tropical climates and exotic locations and spent several years living and painting in Italy, Brazil and Panama before moving 13 years ago to the Big Island. Capell finds endless inspiration in painting outdoors and enjoys the challenge of capturing the scene and the mood in three to four hours while on location. “I find great excitement in never knowing what the day or the surroundings will present to me, and each painting becomes a small momento of that day in my life. Even small mistakes become treasures,” she said, remembering blowing sand granules sticking to her canvas while painting near the beach.

Capell has exhibited her work in various venues around the islands and internationally. Her work is currently on exhibit at the Wishard Gallery in Waimea and examples of her work can be seen at her online blog, lcapell.blogspot.com.
