A major swell is continuing to produce powerful waves off the Big Island’s east-facing shores.
The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning until 6 p.m. Wednesday for the affected coastlines, where 12- to 16-foot waves, strong rip currents and dangerous swimming conditions are expected. Forecasters anticipate this large surf will persist through Wednesday because of a continuing large north-northeast swell.
Battering waves will pound the shoreline and may splash onto the makai lanes of Bayfront Highway in Hilo, especially during times of high tide, according to the Honolulu Forecast Office.
