28 arrested for suspected DUI

Police arrested 28 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Feb. 20 and Sunday; 12 were involved in traffic accidents and two were younger than 21.

Police have made 230 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 228 during the same period in 2011, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

South Hilo and Kona officers arrested 11 motorists in each district while Puna officers nabbed four. South Kohala officers arrested two motorists in the district.

There have been 219 major accidents this year compared with 229 during the same period last year.

To date, there have been five traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways, compared with five fatalities during the same period in 2011, according to police.

Elderly woman dies after being hit by car

A 92-year-old Hilo woman died Monday after she was struck by a vehicle near the Kamana Senior Center in Hilo.

The victim has been identified as Tamiko Fujio, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Responding to an 8:48 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined a 59-year-old Hilo woman was reversing a 2008 Toyota four-door sedan from the lawn to the Kamana Street center’s paved driveway when she struck Fujio, who was walking to her vehicle, according to police.

Fujio was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she died at 11:30 a.m., according to police. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

Police do not believe that alcohol, drugs or speed were factors in this crash. A negligent homicide case has been initiated and an autopsy ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Because the death occurred on private property it is not counted toward the official public roadway traffic fatality count, which stands at five, according to police.
