Parks and Recreation archery class deadline Friday
The Department of Parks and Recreation in Kailua-Kona will offer free beginner/intermediate archery classes for children ages 9-14 in March.
The classes, scheduled on three consecutive Tuesdays starting March 6, will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. in Hale Halawai’s community center. Parks and Recreation will provide equipment for the class. Participants may use their own equipment, but the equipment must receive approval from recreation director Marshall Tohara.
The activity is free, but organizers are asking for donations of large balloon packages. Instructors will use balloons as targets.
Early registration is recommended, and the registration deadline is Friday.

Honokaa High fundraiser golf tournament Sunday
The inaugural Honokaa Dragon Baseball Golf Tournament had to be rescheduled and will be held at 8 a.m. Sunday at Makalei Golf Club.
The tournament will be a two-person scramble. The entry fees are $150 per player or $250 per team.

Cattle Barons’ Ball and golf tourney Saturday
The inaugural Cattle Barons’ Ball-Hawaii Golf Tournament will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the American Cancer Society of Hawaii Island.
Teams and sponsors are now being sought. Four-man teams can register for $1,000. Three levels of sponsorship are also available, silver ($1,250), gold ($1,500) and platinum ($1,750). All sponsor levels include a four-man team and a tee sponsorship.

Archery hunting in Puu Anahulu GMA
The Department of Land and Natural Resources announces the opening of archery hunting in Puu Anahulu Game Management Area beginning Saturday and running on weekends and state holidays through June 30.
The following conditions and restrictions will apply for the hunt:
— The daily bag limit will be one pig of either sex, one male goat and one male sheep per hunter per day.
— Hunters will need to obtain 2012 billy and ram tags to legally hunt in this area. Tags may be obtained from any Hawaii Island Division of Forestry and Wildlife office and a number of commercial vendors. Tags may be obtained at no cost this year because of the recent appellate court ruling.
— Hunters must be in possession of an unused 2012 ram or billy tag to continue hunting in the area. The harvest tags will not be transferable and must be placed through the hind leg of the animal immediately after each kill.
Report game law violations to the Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement at 974-6208 in Hilo. After hours and on weekends and holidays, calls may be made toll-free to Department of Land and Natural Resources enforcement at 643-DLNR (643-3567).

USA girls volleyball tryout
A USA girls volleyball high-performance tryout will be held at 6 p.m. March 12 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Check-in is at 5 p.m.
The cost is $65 for online registration, and the deadline is 6 a.m. March 9. The late or walk-up fee is $100.
Participants are required to bring an online receipt of payment and medical form.

Rugby referee certification clinic March 10 in Hilo
Hawaii Youth Rugby will hold a referee certification clinic from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 10 at Keaukaha Technology Center in Hilo.
Those requiring overnight stay can stay at the Naniloa Hotel.
Registration is online, and there is a mandatory pre-course online form that must be filled out prior to the clinic. Referees must be pre-registered as a referee on the usarugby.org website. The cost is $35 to register as a referee on the website, and the fee for the clinic in Keaukaha is $50. The local fee includes lunch, refreshments, book, referee cards, law book and whistle.

Keauhou Canoe Club
$1,000 scholarship
The Keauhou Canoe Club will offer two $1,000 scholarships to any West Hawaii graduating senior who was a member of a high school paddling team or club-level paddling organization within the past 18 months.
The first is an academic scholarship awarded to a student with a minimum 2.9 grade-point average. Transcripts are required.
The second scholarship is the Mike Haines Memorial Merit Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior who has contributed to his or her paddling club or to the community at large through leadership, volunteerism and service.
Students may apply for only one scholarship.

Bicycle time trial upcoming

Phenom basketball exposure camp upcoming
The Phenom Top 150 camp designed to give high school basketball players exposure to college programs will be held next month on Oahu.
The Phenom 150, for students in ninth through 12th grades, will be March 10-12 at the Manoa Valley district park gyms.
The cost for each camp is $195 per player.
The regional camps are designed to allow Phenom to select players for its national camps in the summer. The national camps will have college coaches in attendance.

Konawaena baseball fundraiser golf tourney March 11
The Konawaena Dugout Club will sponsor a golf tournament to benefit the Konawaena baseball team March 11 at Kona Country Club. The tournament will try to raise money for preseason expenses, such as uniforms and equipment.

Big Island Candies tournament May 11
The Big Island Candies Senior Golf Tournament is scheduled for May 11 at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course. The event is open to all Big Island residents 55 and older.
The registration fee is $90 per person, and it includes green fee, cart, lunch, and gratuities. Slots are available to the first 140 entrants on a first come, first serve basis. The tournament format is 18 holes, low net with an established handicap index as of March 2012.
The maximum handicap index is 40.
All USGA and special course rules will apply. Golfers will be divided into four flights: men and women aged 55-64 and men and women aged 65 and over.
Tournament entry forms will be available beginning March 1 at the West Hawaii Special Programs office (West Hawaii Civic Center, Building B), Hilo Kamana Senior Center, Keaau Community Center and by appointment at the Naalehu Coordinated Services for the Elderly office.
Tournament fees must accompany completed registration forms to be confirmed. The deadline for submission of entry forms and payments is April 27. Completed forms and payments will only be accepted at the West and East Hawaii Elderly Recreation offices.
