A 24-year-old Laupahoehoe man died Sunday from injuries he received in a single motorcycle crash on Kalanianaole Street in Hilo, just east of Koloa Street.

Police identified the motorcycle driver as Dimitri I. Sheehan of Laupahoehoe.

Responding to a 4:08 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined Sheehan was operating a 2002 Honda motorcycle and traveling west on Kalanianaole Street when he did a “wheelie,” lost control, ran off the right side of the road and struck a street sign. He was wearing a helmet, according to the Police Department.

Sheehan was transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 5:43 p.m. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were involved, but speed was a factor in this crash, police said.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
