Sweeting beats Young in Florida
DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — In an all-American first-round match on Monday at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships, Ryan Sweeting swept Donald Young 6-1, 6-1 on a windy day near the beach. Eighth-seeded Bernard Tomic of Australia also advanced, cruising past wild card Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3.
Sweeting never offered Young a break-point opportunity in the 52-minute match. He also won 21 of 23 first-serve points that went in play.
Young struggled with his serve and was broken on four of nine break chances he presented to Sweeting.
In other first-round matches: Dudi Sela of Israel defeated American wild card Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-3, and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan defeated Matthew Ebden of Australia 6-2, 6-3.
Dokic, Martic advance in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Defending champion Jelena Dokic of Australia and fifth-seeded Petra Martic of Croatia won first-round matches Monday at the Malaysian Open.
Dokic, seeded seventh, beat Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-3, 6-1. The fifth-seeded Martic rallied past Erika Sema of Japan 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Olivia Rogowska of Australia also advanced, downing Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-0.
Two Japanese players reached the second round. Misaki Doi held off Olga Puchkova of Russia 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Kurumi Nara topped Noppawan Lertcheewakarn of Thailand 6-4, 6-3.
Djokovic wins opener in Dubai
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic played his first match since winning the Australian Open, shaking off the rust to beat Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-4, 6-2 Monday in the first round of the Dubai Tennis Championships.
Marko Djokovic — ranked 868 spots below his brother — had a less successful day. The younger Djokovic, a wild-card entry into the tournament, was bounced in the opening round with a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan.
No. 5 seed Mayer advances in Mexico
ACAPULCO, Mexico — Florian Mayer of Germany beat Facundo Bagnis of Argentina 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Mexican Open on Monday.
The fifth-seeded Mayer took advantage of seven aces to get past Bagnis in just over an hour at The Fairmont Acapulco Princess. Mayer had four break opportunities and converted on three of them.
