College access workshop planned

The public is invited to learn more at a free college access workshop, Adults in Transition, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 24 at Kanu o Ka Aina School in Waimea. There will be workshops for adults 25 and older who are thinking about returning to college, starting college or changing careers. Participants will be eligible to earn three college credits at no cost during the summer.

Westbrook to speak on preparedness skills

Dave Westbrook presents “Country Lifestyle and Preparedness Skills” from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 4 at the Honokaa Seventh-day Adventist Church. A vegetarian potluck will follow at 1 p.m.

Westbrook is the speaker/director of Back to Enoch Ministries.

The church is located on the corner of Mamane and Ohelo streets in Honokaa. The meeting will take place in the lower building behind the church. Parking can be accessed from the Ohelo Street entrance.

Imiloa celebrating six years on March 4

The public is invited to celebrate Imiloa Astronomy Center’s sixth anniversary celebration at KTA Family Free Day on March 4. Because of the sponsorship of KTA Super Stores, this celebration is free to the community.

Imiloa’s KTA Family Free Day starts at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. The first 500 keiki visitors will receive a special Imiloa giveaway to take home. The day’s offerings include free access to Imiloa’s exhibit hall and “Journey through the Universe” presentations featuring a keynote speech by Dr. Jeff Goldstein at 1:30 p.m. titled “How Big is Big?” For hungry visitors, KTA Super Stores will be grilling its 1/3-pound beef franks with sweetbread bun for sale and free birthday cake will be served to the first 1,000 visitors.

Special programs include 15-minute planetarium experiences starting at 9 a.m. where the audience will be treated to a night sky presentation and a sampling of Imiloa planetarium shows. Presentations by “Journey through the Universe” astronomy professionals Brad Bailey, Douglas Arion, Gordon Squires, Scott Fisher and Tim Slater will start at 9:30 a.m. Hands-on activities will be offered by various departments and colleges of the University of Hawaii at Hilo: College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management, College of Business and Economics, College of Pharmacy, Department of Education, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Ka Haka Ula O Keelikalani College of Hawaiian Language and Na Pua Noeau Center for gifted and talented Native Hawaiian children. Informative booths by Mauna Kea observatories and STARBASE Hawaii flight simulators will also be on site for visitors.

Imiloa partners with “Journey through the Universe,” a program offered to communities across the nation to provide an authentic window to science as a human endeavor, using sustainable programming designed to both inspire and educate. Special programming and a Family Science Day are planned as part of the annual celebration.

“Journey through the Universe” is a full week of cosmic exploration, star-studded space and science education, which is scheduled from March 1 through 9. The program engages local communities of students, teachers and parents in a whirlwind of activities and learning. Gemini Observatory and the Department of Education Hilo/Laupahoehoe/Waiakea Complex Area have sponsored “Journey through the Universe” in Hilo since 2004. Pahala library reopens to public

Pahala Public and School Library, located at 96-3150 Pikake Street on the campus of Ka’u High and Pahala Elementary Schools, reopened for public service on Thursday.
