Waiakea’s Quintin Torres-Costa was in midseason form Thursday at the Stanley Costales Sr. Memorial Baseball Tournament. The Warriors’ bullpen, however, still has a few kinks to work out.
Campbell rallied for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning off three Warrior relievers for a 7-4 victory at Wong Stadium.
Torres-Costa, the ace left-hander for the defending Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I champions, pitched six shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing only five hits before leaving with his team leading 4-0.
The Sabers of the Oahu Interscholastic Association quickly got to Korin Medeiros in the seventh. The senior didn’t retire any of the five batters he faced, allowing a walk, a single and two hit batters to go along with sophomore Waylen Lindsey’s RBI double.
Medeiros clobbered a two-run home run during Waiakea’s three-run third inning.
Junior Austin Mariano pitched 2 1/3 innings to get the win.
At 7 p.m. today in the semifinals of the preseason baseball tournament, Campbell will play the winner of Thursday’s late game between host Hilo High and Pac-Five of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Waiakea gets the loser today at 2 p.m.
The 4:30 p.m. semifinal today features a pair of BIIF Division II teams, Kamehameha-Hawaii and Konawaena.
