A woman and infant are in critical condition and four other Japanese nationals seriously injured following a one-car crash Thursday afternoon in Pahala.

Responding to the 5:12 p.m. report, fire rescue personnel determined a passenger van with seven occupants traveling south on Mamalahoa Highway apparently wrecked near mile marker 47, said Pahala Fire Station Capt. Neil Yoshioka. The van, which did not appear to belong to a tour company, did not overturn and no other vehicles were involved, he said.

Upon arrival, cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts were under way on the infant, whose age and gender were unavailable, Yoshioka said. The infant and a woman, who were both listed in critical condition, were then transported by Chopper 2 to Hilo Medical Center.

Four other occupants were transported in serious condition to Ka’u Hospital, he said. One occupant did not require transport.
