The Hawaii Fire Department is investigating a fire discovered Sunday evening in an industrial gas dryer at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, which officials said could have caused an estimated $1 million if it had spread.
Responding to the 7:02 p.m. call, firefighters heard a smoke alarm and found light smoke coming from the new gymnasium. Campus security was unable to located the origin of the smoke, but an investigation of surrounding buildings led to a smoldering fire in a dryer in the Physical Education building.
