An 80-acre brush fire that broke out Saturday afternoon near Waikoloa Elementary School is contained and under control, said Hawaii Fire Department West Hawaii Battalion Chief Steve Loyola.

The fire, reported about 12:45 p.m., consumed about 80 acres behind the elementary school spanning north toward Kekumu Place, said Bill Hanson, civil defense administrative officer.

As of 4:45 p.m., crews had established a fire break around 50 percent of the perimeter, Loyola said.

Fire crews will remain at the scene throughout the night, he said.
