A brush fire that broke out Saturday afternoon near Waikoloa Elementary School, forcing the evacuation of a car show, has consumed about 80 acres, according to Hawaii County Civil Defense.

The fire, reported about 12:45 p.m., consumed about 80 acres behind the elementary school spanning north toward Kekumu Place, said Bill Hanson, civil defense administrative officer. As of 3:15 p.m., it was not spreading and crews were working to establish a fire break.

The Waikoloa Lions Club’s Island Fever car show was evacuated by police as a precaution, he said.

No homes are threatened and no other evacuations have been ordered, Hanson said. No roads have been closed because of the fire.

Crews remain on the scene.
