To join the lunacy, just show up Sunday with a water bottle so our negative profit disorganization can spend less money on cups. Call Peaman at 938-2296 with silly statements, questions, or if you want to hear the voice of a person with the skinniest legs in Kona.

BY Sean “Peaman” Pagett | Speical to West Hawaii Today

I’ve always prided myself on being up to date and aware of all of our local multisport events. Well, in the past I may have done a good job, but in today’s world of tweets, texts and emails I’m completely out of the loop.

The first week of February was a prime example where I knew about the Team Mango Springtime Triathlon, but had no idea that on that same day Jeff and Dana Strang were having the Strang Superbowl Sunday Run and that just two days later the Queen Kaahumanu Triathlon Club was putting on a cycling time trial.

The good news out of all this is that I’ve got results from all three and as usual our athletes were awesome.

At the Springtime Triathlon visiting Ironman athletes Thomas Vonach and Yvonne Van Vlerken were able to bike and run faster than both Lance Davisson and Tai Scarbrough to take the top two spots. Davisson and Scarbrough were in front following the 1/2-mile swim, but Vonach and Van Vlerken hammered into the lead during the 15-mile bike ride.

Vonach started the challenging 6-mile run with a lead over Van Vlerken and lost only 2 seconds to the 2009 women’s runner-up at the Ford Ironman World Championship. Vonach crossed the line in 1:31:02. Van Vlerken followed at 1:33:04.

Scarbrough outrode Davisson and held him off during the run for a third-place time of 1:37:25. Jano Soto also rode past Davisson and hung on for a fourth-place finish at 1:40:20. Davisson did close the gap on Scarbrough and Soto to take fifth in 1:42:08.

Michael DeCarli at 1:45:25, Kris Kiser in 1:49:03, Chris Prater at 1:51:30, Jason Nixon in 1:52:49 and Korey Pulluaim at 1:54:08 made up the rest of the very strong top 10.

The ladies chasing Van Vlerken were equally impressive with the always-tough and tenacious Kym Kiser taking second for the ladies and 12th overall at 1:57:40. Ironman and Ultraman finisher Susan Nixon followed in 15th overall with a third-place women’s time of 2:08:28. Lori Montgomery glided her way to a fabulous fourth-place finish in 2:19:52. Sandra Kimball at 2:20:56, Wendy Minor in 2:27:12 and Carol Elwyn at 2:53:14 wrapped up the outstanding ladies lead group.

In the relay race, Rob VanGeen ran off of Kym Kiser’s swim and bike to take first for the teams in 1:53:28. The duo of Dave Pratt and Shirley Pratt took second in 2:01:28. Gerb Weber and Cliff Hanger wrapped up third with their time of 2:27:36.

My peamania and peabrainitis struck again this past Sunday when Team Mango put on its Iron Mango Monster and Mini Monster Triathlons.

Since I didn’t know they were happening I will share the results of those races when I get them and also any news from the Sprint Triathlon coming up Feb. 26. For details on the Mango races call 324-7252 or check out teammangoraces.com.

Another fun event I missed was the Strang Superbowl Sunday Run. The champs in the different distances were Ricki Brown and Jay Klahn in the 4 mile with equal times of 40 minutes. The 8-mile title went to Jeff Isenberg and Colin Daley, once again with equal times of 1:10. Jenna Fear and Tiffany Hirata crossed the line together at 1:26 to take the women’s crown.

Leading the way in the 13.1 miler was Fumitaka Hatanaka in 1:37. Stephen Cosgrove followed at 1:38. Dana Strang took third overall with a top ladies time of 2:07.

Wrapping up a strong group of runners were the 16.5-mile champs. Brooke Myers finished first in 2:18. Jeff Strang followed at 2:25. Sarah “Honu” Higgins crossed the line next with a third-overall time of 2:58. Getting a bunch of friends together for some running sure sounds like a great way to get ready for a fun day of football.

Finally the Queen K Tri Club snuck in its time trial on a Tuesday.

Kris Kiser pounded the pedals to the day’s fastest time of 11:42. Floyd Rhoades was next at 12:48. Daniel Hodel powered in for third at 13:17.

Kym Kiser joined Kris on the top of the list with her leading lady time of 13:46. Cindy Wild at 20:00 and Patricia Henderson in 20:00 closed out the women’s top three.

Our local hammerheads can look forward to another time trial on Saturday. The Hawaii Cycling Club’s 10-mile TT will start at the bottom of Kaiminani Drive at 8 a.m.

Another 12-miler will be held in Waikoloa on March 18. For information, or to volunteer, contact Dawn Henry at 756-1996 or by email aloha@healingislandmassage.net.

On Feb. 19 our fanatical Frozen Pea Productions group will be out to confuse and amuse our runners and walkers with a trio of footraces.

All three run/walks start at 8:03 a.m. next to Kailua Pier.

The shortest is the Golden Fox 1-Mile Gallop that will cover 63,360 inches.

Next in progressive distance, The Dragon Dash is twice as far at 126,720 inches.

Finally, we’ve got the Terrific Turtle Trudge that will total out at 332,640 inches.

Besides confusing everyone with our inches we will also divide our pods (divisions) up by weight rather than age.

The simple part is that no entry fees or sign-ups are needed. We will sign everyone out following the events.

We will also have some snack and, of course, prizes and toys in a random drawing open to all runners, walkers and volunteers.
