SPECIAL TO WEST HAWAII TODAY
Bill Jaeger, stained glass artist with Kailua Village Artists, will be the featured member artist during February.
In this show, Jaeger is taking his impressions of the Big Island to another dimension with his new stained glass box series. The colorful boxes with hinged lids are created in a variety of sizes and feature images inspired by the islands, such as honu, hibiscus and reef fish. Jaeger will also be showing panels featuring parrots, sea turtles, tropical fish and items of Hawaii’s paniolo heritage. He occasionally incorporates beveled glass clusters into the design for added dimension and sparkle. A full range of his work — night lights, sun catchers and smaller stained glass panels — will also be displayed.
Jaeger learned stained glass many years ago, but never had the time to fully develop his skills until moving to the Big Island with his wife, Kathleen, in 2004. He retired from various management positions held for 28 years with the Colgate-Palmolive Co.
All of Jaeger’s pieces are of original designs made of hand-cut glass using the copper foil method.
Jaeger invites the public to see his latest work and talk story with him at the Alii Sunset gallery on Thursday and Feb. 27 and at the gallery at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort on Feb. 23. Additionally, Jaeger will demonstrate some stained glass techniques used to create a panel, such as glass cutting and foiling at those times.
