Sorum teaching watercolor workshop

Maya Sorum will teach a watercolor workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 18 at Blue Sea Artisans Gallery in Kona International Market.

Sorum is a self-taught artist and has spent 30 years living and creating art on the Big Island. She started painting at age 4 and knew that art was what she was born to do.

She has been painting professionally since 1982. In 1983, she started the Artist in Residence Program for the Mauna Lani Bay Resort, where she continues to paint and teach lessons.

This workshop is designed for beginners and the intermediate painter. Sorum shows techniques that will help in creating a successful painting. Some drawing skills are required in this process.

The emphasis will be on painting a palm tree/beach scene, but she is open to any student’s desires to paint something else.

Participants should bring water and a snack or lunch since there will be a 30-minute break.

For more information on the workshop, call Blue Sea Artisans Gallery at 329-8000.

Reception honors three artists today

The Kailua Village Artists invites the public to a reception honoring three featured member artists — Linda Savell, Barbara Denman and Bill Jaeger. The event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the co-op’s Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort gallery. All three artists will be present, and light pupu will be served.

Savell is featuring dichroic glass jewelry with pendants and earrings available.

Denman’s versatility of expression and the desire to explore various art forms has led this artist through watercolor, acrylic and silk painting and into gourd design.

Stained glass artist Jaeger will display his stained glass box series. He will also be showing panels featuring parrots, sea turtles, tropical fish and items of Hawaii’s paniolo heritage.

Kailua Village Artists operates two galleries. The second gallery is at the Alii Sunset Plaza and is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Both galleries are hosted by the member artists.
