WHT STAFF REPORTS

If there’s anything Hawaii Prep’s girls basketball team has lacked this season, Ka Makani coach Craig Kimura said, it was patience.

On Tuesday at Oahu’s Radford High, HPA gave Kimura what he’s been looking for all season.

Leahi Lindsey and Chancis Fernandez each scored 14 points for HPA, which pulled away late in the fourth quarter to beat University 50-38 in a Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II first-round game.

In the final minutes, HPA (8-5) sealed the victory at the free throw line, with Lindsey going 5-of-7 down the stretch. The senior forward also contributed 11 rebounds, six assists and two blocks, getting most of her points in the paint.

Fernandez hit 5 of 10 from the charity stripe in the game.

All the while, Kimura said, Ka Makani took care of the basketball, committing just 10 turnovers against Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up University (11-3), which attacked HPA with half-court and full-court pressure. Kimura estimated his team averaged 18 turnovers per contest in Big Island Interscholastic Federation play this season.

“Offensively, we were patient,” Kimura said.

Nani Lum added nine points, and Eliyah Fernandez had seven for BIIF No. 3 seed HPA, which will play defending HHSAA Division II state champion Radford (9-4) at 7 p.m. today.

Kimura also credited his team for its effort on the defensive end.

“Team-wise, this is the best defensive effort we had all year,” he said.

Crystal Wang led the Jr. Rainbows with 10 points, while Kianalei Machida and Quirena Natividad each had eight.
