Students invited to design coin
All Hawaii Island K-12 students are invited to enter the 2012 Mauna Kea Coin Contest now to March 9 at island KTA Super Stores locations. Students are asked to include both astronomy and Hawaiian cultural themes in their design for the Mauna Kea coin.
The Mauna Kea Coin Contest is initiated by Mauna Kea Astronomy Outreach Committee and co-sponsored by KTA Super Stores, Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaii, Onizuka Space Center and Galaxy Garden/Paleaku Gardens Peace Sanctuary.
Entries will be divided into three categories: kindergarten through fourth grade; fifth through eighth grades; and ninth through 12th grade. The top three entries in each category will compete for the grand prize which will be struck on a 1.5-inch coin.
Entries must be submitted at the KTA Super Stores courtesy desks at Keawe Street in Hilo, Puainako, Waimea, Kailua-Kona and Keauhou by March 9. The first 500 entries will receive a 2011 Mauna Kea aluminum coin at the KTA courtesy desks.
The purpose of the contest is to enhance awareness of Mauna Kea. The first coin contest was held January to March 2011.

Accountants group offers scholarships
The Big Island Chapter of the Hawaii Association of Public Accountants is accepting applications for its scholarship program for the 2012-13 academic year. Each year, the association awards up to $3,500 in scholarships to future accountants. These include two $1,000 awards for students to use at a four-year college or university and two $750 awards for students to use at a two-year college. The institutions need not be located in Hawaii, but they must be accredited.
Qualified applicants must either be current Big Island high school seniors, graduates of any Big Island high school or be enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Hilo or Hawaii Community College in the fall (regardless of high school affiliation). Students must register for enrollment full-time (12 or more credits) in order to receive the award.
Applicants are judged based on academic achievements, involvement in extracurricular activities, a personal letter of introduction and financial need. Applications are available at high school counselors offices, the UH-Hilo financial aid office and at hawaiiassociationofpublicaccountants.org. Deadline for the 2012-13 academic year is March 30.
Kealakehe High council meets Feb. 16
Kealakehe High School’s Community Council meets from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room.
Agenda items include continued discussion of request for special projects money for the CEPA program and Citizenship Awards and agenda items for the annual public hearing on March 6.
Parents, students and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
