Paddling death

Responses appreciated

Keauhou Canoe Club is mourning the death of one of our paddlers this past week. Our focus and emphasis at this time is to support the paddler’s family and our paddling community.

The members of Keauhou Canoe Club appreciate the quick response and valiant efforts of the Hawaii Fire Department, Capt. Bill from Sea Quest, an unidentified fisherman and Keauhou paddlers Terry Neubert, Jim Uding and Sammi Stanbro.

Fire Department personnel have responded to several such emergency situations in Keauhou Bay and Heia Bay in the past years and we sincerely appreciate and applaud their efforts to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community.

Hilo bridge repair

Wrong priority

Our county infrastructure is crumbling. However, our council is considering spending millions of dollars to rebuild a small bridge, which affects 40 people.

With so many islandwide needs, they should prioritize, and choose to spend the money on projects that benefit a greater number of residents.

Instead, the council members have spent years debating and passing a ban on plastic shopping bags. When are they going to tackle the major issues? Fortunately, it’s an election year.
