Club has three scholarships available

Kuakini Hawaiian Civic Club of Kona will offer three $500 scholarships to West Hawaii residents. Students who are enrolled at least half time in high school, vocational school or any institute of higher learning, or individuals studying Hawaiian culture are encouraged to apply.

The club was established in 2003 to promote the civic and social welfare of the long-held Hawaiian traditions in our community.

Kona Masons offering $500 scholarships

The Kona Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons will award $500 scholarships to deserving Kealakehe and Konawaena High School students.

Scholarships are awarded based on a student’s need, academic achievement and community activities. There is no requirement to have an affiliation with the fraternity to apply.

College agriculture students can apply for FFA conference

The national Future Farmers of America organization is accepting applications for its 2012 New Century Farmer conference.

This exclusive, highly competitive conference is open to college of agriculture students who intend to pursue careers in production agriculture after college. Those selected to attend the conference will be among the first in the nation to learn about the latest technological developments in the agriculture industry, and they will receive business management advice from top industry leaders. The program will also help students develop a nationwide network of industry professionals and colleagues.

The conference is free to those students who are selected and will take place July 8 to 14 in Johnstown, Iowa. The deadline for applications is March 15 at 5 p.m. EST. Only the top applicants will be selected to participate. Potential participants can learn more about the program and download an application at ffa.org/collegiate.

The conference is sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred, a DuPont business; Case IH; CSX Corp. and Farm Credit as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Successful Farming is a media partner of the conference.


Hirono announces academy nominations

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono, D-Hawaii, has announced her nomination list of 30 students, who hail from Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, to the U.S. military service academies for the class of 2016.

Hirono’s nominations from West Hawaii include:

c U.S. Naval Academy — Daniel Cook (Waimea), Hawaii Preparatory Academy; Gabriel Keller (Honokaa), Honokaa High School; Jonathan Lomberg (Honaunau), Kealakehe High School.

c U.S. Air Force Academy — Katherine Malia Case (Waimea), Hawaii Preparatory Academy.


Waimea Montessori school sets open house

Hawaii Montessori Schools-Kamuela Campus will hold a children’s tour open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. Families of current and prospective students between the ages of 15 months and 6 years old are invited to attend the event at 64-1058 Mamalahoa Highway, Waimea.

Families will have an opportunity to visit classrooms, meet current families, learn about the school and its programs, including financial aid opportunities, and meet faculty members and administration
