If response is any indication of demand, then the Westpro Group is filling a great need.
Almost 300 families were awarded lottery numbers Wednesday night in hopes of purchasing one of 108 two-bedroom, two-bath condominiums in the Seascape subdivision, just south of Kona Palisades.
The condo units, classified as “affordable” under a federal definition, will be sold for $284,600 each, with the first 108 people guaranteed a unit if they can close their deals. They will be developed by Seascape Development LLC, a subsidiary of Westpro.
Alan Dickler, president of Westpro Holdings, said the three-week period where people could pick up applications for the lottery attracted more than 1,100 families and individuals who were interested in an affordable unit. He said it indicates a huge interest in affordable home ownership.
Dickler said he was gratified by the reaction of those who drew low numbers.
“At the lottery, families who drew the first of the 290 lottery numbers stayed to the end and thanked us for the opportunity to become homeowners,” said Dickler. “Our intention from the start at Seascape was to make a positive difference in the lives of local residents and that concept became a reality tonight.”
All of those who participated received a number, and as those with low numbers fail to qualify, those who drew higher numbers will be offered units as their numbers come up.
Each 1,050-square-foot unit features an open kitchen, a great room, two full baths and a large covered lanai. Dickler said Seascape, which will feature solar water heaters, is an Energy Star project, a coveted rating by the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, keeping homeowner’s utility costs down.
Applicants had to meet affordable housing eligibility requirements regulated by the County of Hawaii’s Office of Housing and Community Development.
The project will consist of 13 eight-plex prefabricated steel-framed buildings, as well a single prefab four-plex. Dickler said the homes, the first multi-family units to come out of the Westpro factory mauka of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Honokohau Harbor, will be partially assembled and then moved to the site in Kalaoa.
