Merriman’s Market Cafe receives Ilima Award
Merriman’s Market Cafe at the Waikoloa Kings’ Shops was recently honored with an Ilima Award as 2008 “Best Neighbor Island” restaurant.
Presented by The Honolulu Advertiser, the Ilima Award is annually determined through input from both reader polls and the preferences of the Advertiser’s restaurant critics.
Merriman’s Market Cafe features a Mediterranean-inspired menu, complete with tapas, tagine roasted mahimahi, fresh hummus, as well as caponata and bruschetta. The menu features a variety of locally grown produce — from Nakano Farm tomatoes to the Hirabara Farm Spinach Salad and locally raised beef.
“We’re honored to have received our first Ilima Award for the Market Cafe,” Chef Peter Merriman said. “Our ongoing approach has been to ‘do the right thing’ for farmers, our island and our guests. We’ve always focused on alignment and sustainability for our island home.”

Kohala Book Shop closing doors Feb. 1
The Kohala Book Shop will permanently close on Feb. 1. However, its 30,000 books will continue to be sold on the Internet starting May 1.
“It’s been a wonderful 10 years,” said owner Jan Morgan. “But we decided that it is time to retire, once again, and call our life our own.”
