Green market celebrates Halloween on Sunday

The South Kona Green Market welcomes keiki of all ages to join in a Halloween celebration with a sustainable twist from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. The market’s farmers and artists will provide activities for everyone, along with the usual slate of fresh produce, local art and tastily prepared foods.

“We will have everything from Pony Rides to coffee sack races,” said founding member Rosemarie Ahia, of South Kona. “My granddaughter, an experienced face painter, will be taking requests at Auntie Rosie’s Corner.”

Other vendors will have Halloween-themed snacks and treats in their regular booths and a visit from the “Reading Witch” is planned.

Healing garden festival is next weekend

The Hawaii Healing Garden Festival will be held Nov. 1 and 2 at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.

The statewide festival is presented by Hawaii Health Guide.com and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. This festival will highlight the Big Island’s cultural healing arts, health and wellness and sustainable living.

On Nov. 1 is the garden’s annual Arbor Day free Hawaiian tree giveaway and plant sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The festival runs from at 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a health expo featuring healthy products and services, and the opportunity to learn from nine presenters on all kinds of things plants can do to keep people healthy — from treating vog, to raw divine desserts to how to grow medicine. There will be healthy food and Hawaiian slack key music. The event is free and for all ages.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 is a workshop and tour day. A free community taro planting workshop meets with taro expert Jerry Konanui. “Organic Farming and Gardening;” a free workshop with Adam Trujillo of Hawaii Roots Down; and “Amazonian Medicines and Super-foods” with Jerome River Black, botanical researcher and the founder of Herbs America, Amazon Therapeutics and Maca Magic, are planned.

Another highlight is a “Healthy Tennis!” workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at Holua Tennis Center with Hawaiian Isles Tennis founder Leilani Magee, Hawaii’s reigning Grand Prix Women’s Tennis Champion.
